Travel Guide: Kennebunkport, Maine

Travel Guide: Kennebunkport, Maine

Now that it’s officially Spring back in the U.S., I thought that it is the perfect time to release another Maine Travel Guide from my Coastal Roadtrip throughout Maine! If you haven’t been following along on any of my Maine Travel Guides in the past, I’ve done posts throughout my whole road trip down the Coast of Maine including Picture Perfect Spots in Acadia National Park, Travel Guides in Bar Harbor, Rockland, and Portland, and a review of the beautiful boutique hotel, 250 Main.

If you’re thinking about traveling throughout Maine, I definitely recommend you take a look at those other posts for inspiration on where to stop along your journey and what to see and do in each destination.

Today, I’m going to tell you all the places you need to visit and see in Kennebunkport and Kennebunk, Maine. Kennebunkport is a coastal town in Southern Maine. It’s about only an hour and a half from Boston and 40 minutes from Portland, which is why we opted to stay in this area instead of directly in Portland, as I mentioned in our Portland Travel Guide. Although Kennebunkport Maine is a small little area, it’s full of beautiful buildings, lots of seafood, and places to see. It’s definitely a breath of fresh air from the busy city life of Portland.

Where to Stay:

Port Inn Kennebunk: If you checked out my Portland Travel Guide, you would know that we stayed in Kennebunk, about 40 minutes outside Portland. Although it’s advertised as a “boutique hotel,” The Port Inn had more of a similar vibe to other inexpensive chain hotels like Holiday Inn and wasn’t anything like our boutique hotel, 250 Main in Rockland. However, it still included amenities like free wifi, continental breakfast and it was overall very comfortable. If you’re searching for Kennebunkport hotels that are more of a budget-friendly option, the Port Inn is definitely a good option to consider.

Especially when it comes to finding hotels in Portland or searching for the perfect Kennebunkport hotels, we were overall really happy with our selection at the Port Inn Kennebunk and didn’t mind not staying in Kennebunkport hotels right in the center of the city.

Where to Eat:

Alisson’s Restaurant: If you’re looking for a traditional pub-style meal, Alisson’s is the place to go. Kennebunkport ME was our last stop on our Coastal Maine road trip, so although we wanted to take advantage of the fresh Maine seafood one last time, we also had our fair share of it and some traditional pub food sounded fantastic.

If you’re looking for a casual sit-down restaurant, Alisson’s maybe your place. The food was good and the restaurant is conveniently located in the center of town. There are TVs all around and board games to play, so it’s definitely a fun atmosphere-perfect for large groups or families!

The Clam Shack: If you still haven’t gotten your seafood fix, there’s plenty of options in Kennebunkport Maine. The Clam Shack is your traditional Maine seafood stand, perfect for quick seafood takeaway. It can get extremely popular, so maybe go during off-peak times to get your seafood fix!

The Spirit of Massachusetts: If you’re looking for a more intimate and small place to eat, try out The Spirit of Massachusetts, a restaurant on a boat! Although we didn’t eat here, it looks absolutely delicious and such a cool, untraditional experience for dinner!

What To Do:

Explore the Town: There’s plenty to do in the tiny town of Kennebunkport Maine. The area is full of boutiques, great restaurants, candy shops, and beautifully colored buildings. The whole town is definitely picture-perfect with floating restaurants, multicolored buildings, and a beautiful port. Whether you’re in the mood for some delicious seafood, a beach day, or some shopping, you can find it all in Kennebunkport.

The Bush Compound: The Bush’s have a summer home in Kennebunkport ME and if you explore the town at all you will see that the town absolutely loves the Bush’s. There are tons of random Bush knick-knacks and emblems throughout Kennebunkport. There’s also a museum dedicated to the Bush’s and you can check out the Bush’s compound as well. We just quickly went to a destination that we could view from a distance, but if that’s something that you’re interested in, you can find out more information about it here.

Whale Watching: Kennebunkport Maine, just like the rest of Maine, has tons of whale watching options and other water activities such as lobster cruises. The weather wasn’t the best when we visited, but on a beautiful, sunny day, whale watching sounds absolutely amazing! You can find more information about whale watching in Kennebunkport here, but you can also find an abundance of different options while simply strolling through the town.

Visit Portland: As I mentioned, Portland is only located about 40 minutes outside of Kennebunk and is the perfect place to explore. If you haven’t checked out my Portland Travel Guide, you really should, especially if you’re planning on visiting Kennebunkport. There’s a complete guide of what to eat, must-see places in Portland, and what you should do while you’re there.

I hope you find this Kennebunkport Travel Guide helpful and gave you some inspirations for what to see, do and eat while visiting the picture-perfect town of Kennebunkport. As I mentioned, if you’re planning on traveling throughout Maine, definitely check out my other Maine Travel Guide blog posts.  There you will find a lot of inspiration when it comes to Maine travel, exploring the Maine coast, and not only our road trip Maine experience but how to plan a road trip of your own!
