NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park, Tasmanian Retreat

This past weekend, my partner and I went on a long-weekend getaway to Tasmania, which was amazing.

I’d been to Tasmania once before on a cruise and stopped in Hobart and Port Arthur a few years back when I was studying abroad in Australia. Jetstar was having such amazing deals on flights from Sydney to Launceston that we knew we had to book our Tasmanian weekend getaway and explore the area some more!

I have a few different posts all about our Tasmanian Adventure including our trip to Freycinet National Park (a must-see) with Wineglass Bay Cruises, a  Tasmanian Roadtrip Guide, and a 24 Hours in Launceston Travel Guide. Make sure to subscribe to stay up-to-date with all my travel posts!

Halfway through our long weekend Tasmania getaway, we stopped in St. Helens, about 15 minutes from Binalong Bay and the Bay of Fires which was our target destination at that stop. When looking for accommodations in Tasmania, it can be kind of tricky. There are a lot of built-up areas around Launceston and Hobart and popular tourist attractions like Freycinet National Park, but other than Bed & Breakfasts, we found it surprisingly difficult to find standard accommodations.

Bay of Fires, Binalong Bay

Luckily, we found NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park located in St. Helens about 15 minutes away from Binalong Bay.

Our Wandering Mind was lucky enough to partner with NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park, but as always, all opinions are completely my own.

To be completely honest, when we arrived at NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park, I was shocked, but in a good way. After driving a few hours through really small towns, I honestly wasn’t expecting too much when arriving at St. Helens but was extremely pleasantly surprised with what we found.

NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park opened on October 2018. That being said, I assumed that the park was brand-new because of how spotless and like-new everything was. One of my major things when traveling, especially staying at hotels, is cleanliness and how clean the accommodations are and feel and NRMA St. Helens was incredibly clean and comfortable, which is very important in my book.

During our stay, we stayed in the Two-Bedroom Bay View Cabin. NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park offers a range of different accommodations including campsites both powered and unpowdered, studio cabins, and family-style cabins that can sleep from 4-6 people.

When entering our Bay View Cabin, you’re immediately greeted with a little front porch area with two chairs and a table to enjoy the bay view outside. Tasmania can definitely be cold, but we visited in late-September which is Spring in Australia and we were able to enjoy having the door open and enjoyed some time outside during our stay. With our use of this front deck area in early Spring, I can only imagine how perfect it is during the Summer months when it’s warmer.

The great thing about this front deck is that there are two sliding doors to access inside of the cabin. This means that with both doors open, the space of the cabin is able to get so much bigger and enlarges your entertaining and lounging space which is perfect for kids wanting to hang outside or for family meals.

I loved the aspect of the indoor/outdoor space and truly made the cabin feel incredibly spacious.

When walking into the Bay-view cabin you’re greeted with two loveseat style couches. The decorations in the NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park were simple, yet modern and very comfortable. These furnishings and decor not only make space extremely aesthetically pleasing to look at, but very practical as well.

Above the couches is an A/C unit which we did have to turn on at night to get some heat in the Cabin, but within a couple of minutes, we were extremely warm and didn’t need to run it for long. That being said, it was definitely nice to have it and the heat very quickly filled the whole cabin up.

Next to the living room is a little dining area with four seats and a small desk and TV unit above it. I feel like NRMA St. Helens really did a nice job of maximizing space and functionality of these cabins with including pieces like a desk if work needs to be done.

Features like this make the cabin somewhere that your partner and you or your family could stay comfortably for a week or two.

The kitchen at NRMA St. Helens is definitely one of my favorite parts in our bay-view cabin. The kitchen was truly beautiful and clean with its light gray cabinets, subway tile backsplash, and stainless steel appliances.

The kitchen featured a microwave oven, two-burner stove cooktop, and a mini dishwasher. It also included all cooking items like cooking utensils, pots, and pans, plates, but also extra bonuses like a rice cooker and a grill/panini maker.

I’ve stayed at rental apartments many times before – they’re definitely my go-to when it comes to traveling. I love having more space, but then also those inclusions like a full kitchen that you don’t necessarily get with a hotel room. However, a lot of places I’ve traveled to, they didn’t have nearly as many inclusions that NRMA St. Helens did like having simple items like salt and pepper already on hand, dish soap, coffee and tea and all the extra cooking appliances, which was great especially if only traveling there for a short amount of time like we were and don’t want to pick those items up at the store to only use once.

Next to the kitchen was the full bathroom which had another one of my favorite features of the house, a heated light. Just like the rest of the cabin, the bathroom was spotless and featured a large shower with a rain-style showerhead, which definitely made it feel luxurious.

The cabin also included amenities that you would find when staying at a hotel like soap, shampoo, and conditioner that could last you a few days. Once again, perfect for us who were only staying there for a short amount of time.

There are two-bedrooms in the cabin that we stayed in is ideal for a family with the first bedroom having two bunk beds set up, perfect for kids.

The second bedroom features a comfy queen bed, a vanity area with a stool and a wardrobe. The natural, yet modern furnishing continued into the bedroom making space not only functional but very comfortable and cozy.

All of the rooms also featured large windows which let in so much light in all of the rooms, which truly made space feel open and bright. Our cabin was truly so nice and airy that we were more than comfortable during our stay.

Not only does that cabin amenities make NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park the perfect place for a holiday with the family, but the amenities of the NRMA park itself is absolutely amazing and very well-thought-out.

Especially if you’re staying at NRMA St. Helens for a bit of time or you’ve been traveling around Tasmania as we had been, you probably have some laundry to do! There’s a coin-operated laundry facility located on-site that once again looks brand-new and was extremely clean. There was plenty of washers and dryers that you could easily do multiple loads at a time during your stay.

If you’re traveling with kids, NRMA St. Helens is definitely the place to stay.

On the park, there’s a kids game room that has a pingpong table, foosball, a little kids corner, bean bags, and a large TV. This game room is definitely a cool place to hang out and play with your friends, especially if it’s raining or dark outside.

For the day time, kids can enjoy the playground and a giant bouncing pillow! It honestly looked so fun that I wish I was a kid and could go and play on it. There are also paved paths around the park that are great for your kids to ride their bikes and scooters around the area. Needless to say, you’re kids will definitely be occupied at NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park.

NRMA St. Helens is extremely close to St. Helens town which has a couple of grocery stores, bottle shop, gas station, and a few other shops. If you’re looking to dine in, located right at NRMA St. Helens is Parkside Bar and Kitchen an extremely popular restaurant with tons of different options and meals to choose from.

Also located right by the front reception office is a little shop where you can purchase things like alcohol, snacks and candy, and any other small necessities you may need during your stay.

If you’re traveling by camper or just traveling with a large group and want to cook with everyone, the camp kitchens are perfect for just that.

Just like the rest of the NRMA St. Helens Park, the kitchen was once again spotless, incredibly clean, and designed very well with plenty of space for multiple families to cook and dine in the area. With tons of cooking appliances and BBQs located in the kitchen area, you’ll be sure to be able to cook some delicious meals to feed a crowd in this kitchen.

NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park is located right across the street from the beautiful St. Helens bay and is truly a paradise in Tasmania.

If you’re looking to travel around Tasmania I definitely recommend stopping at NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park for a little bit of luxury during your Tasmanian trip. If you’re looking for a retreat for a week with your kids, NRMA St. Helens is also perfect for that as well with all the family-friendly amenities and the spacious, modern cabin accommodations.

Our Wandering Mind got the amazing opportunity to partner with NRMA St. Helens Waterfront Park during our Tasmanian Weekend Getaway. As always, all thoughts and opinions are completely my own.
