Christmas Decorating Tips and How I Decorated for Christmas This Year

Christmas Decorating Tips and How I Decorated for Christmas This Year

This Christmas, I decorated pretty early. I started my Christmas decorations early November because we were going back to the U.S. to spend Christmas with my family and I wanted time to enjoy the Christmas decorations in our home in Australia.

Although early November seems a bit early to decorate for Christmas, I really enjoyed it.

Decorating early allowed me to not be as stressed this Holiday Season.

With Christmas, there’s a lot of things to do with Christmas cards, shopping for gifts, hosting, and traveling. With decorating early, I was able to finish before I really even started to shop for presents and all the other stress that comes along with Christmas so I felt like I could actually enjoy the decorating process.

If you didn’t check out my Berry, Merry Christmas Blog Post on how I decorated for Christmas Last Year, you should check that out. There, you’ll see that I incorporated a lot of the same items, while still purchasing a few new things here and there.

I also did a blog post on how to Decorate your Home for Christmas on a Budget too, which I incorporated those tips and tricks in my Christmas decor this year as well.

One of my top tips when it comes to decorating for Christmas, especially on a budget, is to add to what you already have in your Christmas Collection.

I went with a deep berry red theme last year, specially because I knew that it was something timeless and something that I won’t get sick of. This allows me to slowly add new decor items every year and grow my Christmas Decor collection without spending $1,000 every year on Christmas decorations for my “years Christmas theme.”

That being said, I did purchase quite a few new Christmas items this year and the end of last year after Christmas and I love how they turned out.

In the living room, I purchased all my pillow covers from Ikea for a really affordable price. I really wanted to get pillow covers that I could put on my existing pillow inserts instead of actual pillows because of lack of storage in our home. We don’t have too much storage in our house and storing 7 pillows that I could only use for Christmas time, wasn’t really an option.

I’m really happy with how the pillows transformed the living room and honestly made the whole space feel a lot more Christmasy than last year.

It was a small change, but truly made a huge impact on the space.

On the coffee table, I picked up these different types of trees the end of last year when they were on special after Christmas. After Christmas is a great time to shop and you can easily find decor up to 50-70% off.

The coffee table I kept it pretty simple and  just put them on a tray that I already had from a photo that I saw on Pinterest.

Pinterest is definitely my biggest inspiration when it comes to Christmas and decorating my home in general.

Our Christmas tree was fairly similar to how it looked last year, however, I do have a lot less ornaments on the tree this year. This year, I also decided to decorate our bedroom and put a tree up in there. I used some of the ornaments on the tree last year and put them on our bedroom since they went well with that theme in there.

Our buffet area, I got some garland this year, which I’m really happy how that turned out. The garland wasn’t pre-lit, so I just put some battery operated twinkle lights in and placed some pinecones on it and I’m so happy with it.

I picked up this wood-wick candle from TK Maxx, which smells absolutely amazing. I also think that it also made a really nice and simple centerpiece for the buffet.

The only other decor that I put on the buffet is a couple knick-knacks on these pre-exisiting books and lamp that we’re already on the buffet. I made the “snowglobe jar” which I showed in my Budget Friendly Christmas Decor blog post and just added some candles. DIY and utilizing things like jars and candles and one of my top tips when it comes to decorating on a budget.

I kept the majority of the Christmas decor in the living space with a few touches here and there throughout the home. On the kitchen bench, I added a fake Christmas tree in a galvanised pot,  a cake stand that had sweets and other baked goods throughout the month in it, and some candy canes.

We did originally have a tiny real potted Christmas tree, but we found, unfortunately, that it didn’t like being inside too much. Since we cook and use the kitchen constantly, I didn’t want to go too crazy with the decorations, but still wanted to decorate the space.

With decorating, you also don’t want to do things that aren’t practical, so just having a few items on the kitchen bench, something that we could easy move when we needed to, worked out pretty well.

I also set up a little Christmas coffee bar, which I loved! It was super simple to set up with setting out my Christmas mugs on a wooden platter and my coffee and sugar in their already pre-exisiting jars. It was a great, festive way to start our mornings everyday!

If you live in an area when it’s Winter during Christmas, you could easily do this but with a hot chocolate bar instead!

I finished off the kitchen area with a few other Christmas knick-knacks.

The rest of the house is kept fairly simple. We hung our stockings on a coat rack in the hallway near the front door, due to not having a fireplace and mantle. I feel like this worked very well and since it’s Summer in Australia during Christmas time, we definitely don’t need to be using the coat rack for actual coats.

On our front door, we hung our $10 DIY Christmas Wreath. I have a blog post showing you step-by-step how I made this $10 Christmas Wreath. It’s super simple and I loved how it turned out.

The bedroom is the last area that I decorated. I did a whole Decorate with Me Video on my YouTube channel so you can see the whole process on how I went about decorating the space.

With decorating for Christmas, I love the berry red that I have in our main living space. However, I also love the white, whimsical theme Christmas.

Fortunately, our bedroom is very neutral already, so other than adding a tree with the white Christmas ornaments from our main tree last year and a few Christmas knick-knacks, I didn’t have to purchase much to decorate this room.

That’s another huge tip when it comes to decorating for Christmas.

Start with what you already have and go from there.

Since I based our Christmas decorations off of what I already had in the room, I really didn’t have to do too much to make it feel festive, which was great.

I hope you enjoyed my Christmas House Tour and How I Decorated for Christmas this year.

Hopefully, you gained some inspiration on decorating for next year’s Christmas and early things that you can implement in your decorating process that will not only save you a lot of money but make your home look great too!
